time after time

Back when I was in high school, I was in the school orchestra and chamber orchestra, and the school choir and madrigal group. If that wasn't nerdy enough, I wanted to join another orchestra. I loved the high school orchestra, but it wasn't very challenging and I really wanted to make All-State, so I wanted as much playing experience as possible. I was also on the tennis team and figure skated competitively, so my weekdays were full of sports too. The major youth symphony that everyone was in was GTCYS (Greater Twin Cities Youth Symphony), but whenever it was that they rehearsed I had a conflict. So I looked into other groups that rehearsed at times I could make and joined MAYSO (Mankato Area Youth Symphony Orchestra).

It was in MAYSO and also through my violin teacher that I met a guy that I ended up having a major crush on. He was way WAY more talented than me, but I worked hard so we sometimes could play duets and I sat behind him in MAYSO. The first two stands, we all became good buds, playing some pieces for 4 violins at recitals and such and had a fabulous time together at All-State (I did make it).

The guy went on and has a splendid career in the music world. He's been associate concertmaster of the MN Orchestra for some time, and I was sad to hear last week that because of all this locked-out business, he took a position with an orchestra in Zurich. But while I know some of what he's been up to since he's fairly famous (to us nerdy local orchestra folks, at least, and I go to MN Orch concerts regularly), the reciprocal would not be true.

Over the summer, the conductor of my orchestra informed us that he would be joining us for a solo this fall. Our concert is Sunday, and we had our dress rehearsal tonight. The big wig soloists, we don't get to rehearse with them much, so this was the first time we played with him. Before the rehearsal, I went up and reintroduced myself. As I was talking, it was funny to see the moment the correct synapses fired and he remembered me. It is such a strange thing, to see a crush after not speaking to them for 20 years.

exhale

I think I have been holding my breath for the last three months. I have been more nervous about this election than maybe ever before. So much was at stake, for our state and our nation. I stayed up until 2 am, but with the amendments still too close to call, I decided I needed to be somewhat coherent in class this morning and needed to go to bed. What a relief to wake up this morning, and be able to feel proud for being a part of a state that chose to push against poorly written and discriminatory, hateful language in our constitution.
