a mad, mad, mad, mad men birthday

I love a good theme party. I usually stress about the outfit, but once I've figured something out, it's a lot of fun having a night out in costume. A friend has traditionally had a theme birthday party, and it's always a good time. This year it was Mad Men, in prep for the season premier of the long-awaited fifth season we hope is coming in March.

Aren't we so cute? I lucked out this year with the theme, since my sis and her friends had a Mad Men Halloween party recently. I was able to borrow the dress and earrings, and I already had the cardi, pearls, and shoes to wear. Didn't have to buy a single thing. And my new glasses sort of fit the era too. Perfect!!

At some point we'll probably be too old to do this. Maybe we already are. But until then, I'm always in!

who, us?

I met a friend for a drink last night. It was packed at the bar during the football game, but then cleared out a bit. There was a group of men sitting around the corner of the bar, and C decided they needed a little shake-up to their evening. She had the bartender anonymously send them shots of whiskey. My friend is a little more daring than me, so it's good to hang out with her. I think I could learn a thing or two.

At any rate, the guys thought that the whiskey came from the loud and more provocatively dressed girls sitting next to us, which was fine, because mostly we thought it was fun to do and hope that karma comes back to bless us some time. So maybe some day, someone will send us a drink. Cheers!

Oh no you didn't

Last night, a friend and I went out to dinner and then checked out a new bar in North Loop. It's one of those places that you have to know it's there, because it's just a door down an alley. Like a speakeasy or something. It was pretty cool. The hipster bartenders made yummy drinks, and it was quite a production to get them in the glass. Good for tips, I'd imagine. We were close to the oldest people there, but instead of thinking that makes us sad, I'm going to think it made us hip.

There happened to be a group celebrating someone's birthday, and we struck up a conversation with a couple of guys there. As I introduced myself to the guy sitting next to me, a woman swooped in, grabbed his arm and said, "That's mine."

I laughed my head off. Who says that? Laughing was not the reaction the woman wanted, apparently, because she gave me the evil eye. I just turned around to tell the story to my friend and the other people we were talking to. She didn't like that either.

All in all, a fun night.
